about

I lost my older sister to brain cancer in November 2019.

As an older sister, she introduced me to everything - different cuisines, movies, TV shows, but most importantly, music. She got me into hip hop, into vinyl collecting, into KPop. She taught me that music is less so about genres and labels, more about a good vibe and rhythm - that there are good things everywhere, you just need to be open to hearing it.

This tape is a birthday gift to her, as she turns 31 this year. I originally planned to release this on August 1, but thought it'd be more meaningful to release this at the end of the month, August 31 since:

1. She's turning 31 (how often does that happen?)
2. We can start and end her birthday month with a big celebration!

I hope you all enjoy. Thank you for listening.

A letter to my sister:

Happy Birthday! You would have been 31 this year.

Time really flies. Can you believe it's been almost two years? I started to look back a bit - I looked at old texts, went through our shared images on Facebook (there's a lot of Gyu Kaku in there), went through old postcards you sent me as you were out and about all corners of the world. All I can really say is, I am so glad you were there for me.

As I started making my own music, you were the biggest supporter and encouraged me to continue, even when I was hesitant. I don't know if you still remember this, but we were talking on the phone during my sophomore year of college, catching up - after our usual talk of food, current events, how the Warriors were destined to win the championship this year (finally), you asked me, after a period of silence: ‘how do you feel when you’re making music?’ I never really thought about it, at the time it was just a hobby.

I thought for a bit, and responded ‘I feel good. Happy to make something that’s my own. Nothing bothers me when I’m making music’ You told me, ‘Life is too short to do things that make you unhappy. Keep on going.’

I owe a lot to who I am today because of you. I will continue to celebrate you and remember you as long as I’m around. It’s the least I can do in return.

This tape is a small token of my appreciation. I'll come by today and play it for you. I'll bring some Yamazaki 12, a Bose speaker and definitely some sandwiches from Rhea's Deli. Maybe we'll see some whales, too!

Love you, miss you,

De
